HVO, AdBlue and fuel management system for fleets

TSG Belgium has deployed a fuel management system to accurately analyse and report on the use of three different types of fuel for Atlas Copco, a fleet customer in Belgium. TSG experts also provided equipment to implement HVO and AdBlue and to improve the existing diesel infrastructure.

Smart fuelling solution at Atlas Copco

Atlas Copco is a leading manufacturer of compressors, vacuum solutions, generators, pumps, power tools and assembly systems and operates 30 depots across Europe with around 3,000 fleet units. Atlas Copco supports its customers with temporary and tailored rental solutions.

Fuel management and sustainability are top priorities for Atlas Copco to manage this number of vehicles and equipment units in a smart and efficient way. The company has set strict environmental targets for the coming years to comply with the latest regulations and align with market trends.

To support its operations, Atlas Copco wanted to implement HVO and AdBlue at its headquarters in Boom, in the province of Antwerp, where 300 to 400 fleet units park regularly.

‘For many years, we relied solely on traditional fuel to power our diesel-driven units. But with product innovation, new engines, new technology and our commitment to sustainability, we started using HVO, which is green diesel, and AdBlue,’ says Stephan Van Bosch, Atlas Copco’s Logistics Manager in Boom. He is responsible for coordinating the rental operations and explains the cooperation with TSG in detail. ‘Suddenly we had to handle three different liquids in our depot,’ he adds.

The solution: a fuel management system for the fleet depot

To meet the customer’s needs, TSG installed three Quantium FS pumps (one for each type of fuel) and equipped them with a FuelLOG terminal from LOGmaster for optimal fuel management. LOGmaster, a ProFleet Solutions family product, provides comprehensive information about refuelling activities and makes it possible to generate graphics and reports. The technology is integrated into the QFS dispensers to save space at the depot.

With LOGmaster, drivers must identify themselves with a badge and indicate the tracking number of the fleet unit before refuelling. This provides detailed consumption data per fleet unit and fuel, and stores the data that can be analysed for reporting later – including the type and amount of fuel used, the transaction frequency, time stamps and others.

‘The new transaction registration method and split consumption data allows us to bill our customers more accurately. TSG’s solution has significantly improved the efficiency of our process, and the enhanced reporting and analysis capabilities have added value to depot management'

The frequent reporting has also helped Atlas Copco to better control its fuel consumption, supporting the achievement of its sustainability targets.

Before the TSG project, data was manually extracted from the diesel pump once a month by an employee. ‘We could measure the amount of fuel consumed, but this did not give us insight into where the litres of fuel were going and made it impossible to distinguish between different machines. So we needed better fuel management,’ Stephan says.

The new dispensers allow drivers to fill up as they would at a traditional service station. The HVO and AdBlue dispensers have two pistols with two different flow rates. Each nozzle is equipped with a reel system with 9-meter hoses for ease of use.
