The growing number of countries vowing to ban the sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles is expediting the transition to electric. In particular, the logistics and passenger transport sectors are moving towards renewable energies to help reduce their carbon footprint. Regardless of the number of vehicles, creating a sustainable fleet management strategy is one of the best ways to help reduce the impact of climate change. The question is not if, but rather how fast EVs will be widely incorporated into Irish fleets.

Transcending the benefit to the atmosphere, there are several other compelling reasons why fleet operators should consider electrification. Notwithstanding the large-scale initial investment, running an all-electric fleet will ultimately reduce operational costs by significantly improving the charge per mile and cutting maintenance spend. Branded electric vehicles will demonstrate the company’s commitment to the environment and make a positive statement to the community, whilst attracting like-minded customers and frustrating the competition.

Even in the face of recent periods of economic uncertainty, there has never been a more pivotal time for businesses to prioritise sustainability.

EV Charge - commercial Fleet charging

Behind the scenes

Any fleet manager who runs a pool of commercial vehicles will be very familiar with the complex challenges they face both on a daily and long-term basis. Fleet management encompasses vehicle/equipment performance and maintenance, from acquisition to disposal, to help businesses increase productivity, reduce costs, and ensure compliance across their entire fleet operation. One such responsibility is the monitoring of fuel costs and exploring the potential savings that could be made by transitioning to electric energy as part of the fleet lifecycle management strategy.

It is essential that fleet controllers take advantage of the advanced fleet management tools available on the market today, to ensure operating efficiency and deliver cost reductions through data insight. By leading with technology to improve incident prevention, fleet managers can be more effective than ever before.

Why choose electric?

Transitioning to EVs can help to reduce the total cost of ownership of company vehicles,  haulage fleets, delivery vans and public transport networks in several ways. It is advisable for fleet owners to invest in electric charge points at the depot, enabling the vehicles to recharge overnight ready for the following day’s work. This insightful move will undoubtedly result in dramatically reducing the cost per mile travelled when compared to diesel fuel.

As EVs are inherently more reliable than ICE vehicles due to fewer moving mechanical parts which can be prone to failure, service and maintenance expenses are lowered across the business, making EVs a viable and cost-efficient option.

Sustainability

By virtue of customers and employees increasingly focused on the environmental impact of the companies they buy from and work for, transport managers switching to EVs can improve brand reputation by demonstrating green leadership and stronger sustainability credentials.

Businesses offering EV charging infrastructure and running an EV fleet play a credible role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and inspiring wider EV adoption across society, encouraging customer loyalty and creating greater appeal to potential new recruits and better employee engagement.

TSG is here to help

With over 30 years of experience in the energy sector, TSG provides a complete end-to-end turnkey EV charge solution, from site survey, design, consultancy and distribution network operator (DNO) connections.

TSG is now established as one of Ireland’s first-choice engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, delivering all works within a predefined timescale and budget.  Working with fleet operators to determine the ideal charger type for the business, location and the number of points required, regardless of the scale of the operation. TSG can project manage the entire installation with ease; creating an infrastructure to support the growth of EV charge points as demand increases.

ChargeLog ev charge depot management

ProFleet LOGmaster

For many years, fleets have relied on the very popular DiaLOG fuel management system, however, this very successful product has been superseded by the advanced ProFleet LOGmaster delivering total depot control using a completely new range of stylish terminals.

Compatible with any make or model of existing equipment, LOGmaster helps fleet operators effectively manage all site equipment, including any newly installed EV charge points with ChargeLOG.

ChargeLOG provides simple but effective monitoring of a site’s EV charge operations, offering all of the requisite functionality, whilst having the freedom to connect multiple charger brands, giving operators complete control.

TSG Ireland can supply and install a wide range of charge points

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging info

Fast Charging Speed - typically 6-12 hours
A 6 - 12 hour charge time makes 'fast charging' generally suitable for workplace or hotel use, along with fleet operators wishing to charge vehicles overnight.

Rapid Charging Speed - typically 20-60 minutes
Rapid chargers use a Type 2 charging standard. Rapid AC chargers usually charge an EV up to 80% in 20 to 60 minutes.

Ultra Rapid or Hyper Charging Speed - typically 20-25 minutes
Delivering power from 100kW and more, 100kW, 250kW, 270kW or 350kW, a full charge can be accomplished in as little as 20 to 25 minutes with Ultra-rapid / Hyper chargers

*All charge times are dependent on the capacity of the battery and the % energy stored at the start of the charge. In most cases, EVs charge at a faster speed to 80% of capacity, then slow down to protect the batteries.
