The evolution of hydrogen distribution stations

With the increasing adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles (cars, buses, and trucks) and new industrial hydrogen applications, the development of hydrogen distribution stations is a strategic priority. These stations provide an efficient supply of green or low-carbon hydrogen, reducing pollutant emissions through localised and decentralised production. They also allow easier access to clean energy for both public and private fleets.

Europe is already home to hundreds of operational hydrogen stations, with Germany, France, and the Netherlands leading the way. What is more, there are ambitious plans in place to establish 1,000 stations by 2030, significantly enhancing the accessibility and reliability of this essential infrastructure (source: International Energy Agency (IEA report).

Why hydrogen is essential for the energy transition

In transport in particular, hydrogen serves as a more eco-friendly alternative to electrification or as a complementary solution, particularly in multi-energy station set-ups. Favourable regulations and increasing investments in the hydrogen sector continue to strengthen the viability of these solutions in the long term. Key applications include:
  • Heavy transport

Where hydrogen provides a clean fuel source for trucks, trains, and ships.

  • Industrial processes

Where it can replace fossil fuels in energy-intensive applications such as steelmaking and chemical production.

Hydrogen distribution stations:
A growing network

TSG Group has solidified its position as a key player in the hydrogen sector across Europe. To date, we have played a pivotal role in designing, building, creating and maintaining more than 20 hydrogen stations across the continent.

Our projects include strategic infrastructure developments in Germany, France, Poland, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Using our expertise in this growing sector, we design every station to meet the increasing demand for clean energy in both transportation and industry, reflecting TSG’s commitment to sustainable mobility and a responsible energy future.

Hydrogen project highlights:

  • Hydrogen Distribution Station in Groningen, the Netherlands: TSG maintains this station, which was built for Holthausen (a specialist in hydrogen and zero-emission vehicles) and equipped by our partner Resato.
  • Neumünster Site, Germany: With capacity of one ton per day, this station fuels buses and trucks. We provide maintenance for a client using Resato equipment.
  • Hordain Station, France: TSG carried out the complete delivery and installation of a hydrogen distribution system for Stellantis’s site.
